Prizes / Awards
The first international wine contests took place as early as the 19th century. They were mainly organised as part of World Expositions (the first World Exposition in London in 1851).
Today, there are countless national and international events where wines are assessed and awarded prizes. It is no longer just associations and viticultural institutions that carry out such contests but also a great number of trade publishing houses and publishers of specialist magazines. A ‘brief’ overview can be found on the page of the German Wine Institute.
Generally speaking, all wine contests contribute to a general improvement of quality. They can also serve as a reference for you as connoisseur when it comes to choosing wine. What must however be taken into consideration is the fact that for reasons of cost alone it is impossible to take part in each and every wine competition. A comparison of qualities is therefore only possible among the wines that are entered in the contest.
In the past, the Winzerverein Deidesheim took part in many wine contests. We are enclosing a selection of the award results.
