Dornfelder
This grape variety is a new breed which was created in 1955 by August Herold who, at the Institute of Viticulture and Horticulture, a teaching and grape breeding facility in Weinsberg, crossed the Helfensteiner with the Heroldrebe grape. Over the last 20 years, the Dornfelder has been spreading like wild fire predominantly in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany. Although it is a robust variety that is not very prone to diseases, it makes greater demands on the soil and is rarely satisfied with sandy or stony sites. In addition, it is not suited to locations that are overly exposed to frost. The wine is dark red in colour with clear bluish nuances. Depending on the way the wine is made, we offer the Dornfelder in several variations – as a young wine with intensely fruity aromas reminiscent of morello cherries, black berries and elderberries, or aged in wooden vats or barriques. This is where the tannins and the structure of the wine are emphasised, which leads to the production of very appealing, full-bodied red wines that age well.
