Merlot
Little is known on the origins of this grape variety. It is first mentioned in documents in Bordeaux dating from 14th century. The Merlot grape prefers deep soil with a sufficient supply of water. Currently, in the Palatinate, around 200 hectares of vineyards are planted with Merlot (2007). In 1997 it was grown on less than 6 hectares.
This early ripening variety produces fruity, full-bodied and aromatic wines.
