Portugieser

As a rule this grape variety is used to produce fresh and uncomplicated everyday wines that are pleasant to the taste. The origin of this grape could never be fully established. The Portugieser grape came to Germany (19th century) via Austria (18th century). Whilst the variety is not demanding when it comes to soil quality and location, it does not do well in moist and heavy soil. The grapes ripen early and can be harvested in early autumn. The red wine is characterised by its fresh acidity and light body. Frequently it is turned into Weißherbst (rosé).
