Regent
The Regent grape is a new cross between Diana (Silvaner x Müller-Thurgau) and Chambourcin and was not entered in the official German varieties register until 1995. It is very resistant against fungal diseases. As vintners believe that this red wine grape has a great future, they have increased the area under cultivation in the Palatinate over the last 10 years (from 1997) by 24 hectares to 642 hectares (2007). As this grape ripens early, has an above-average must weight and is hardly susceptible to winter frost, it can be grown in locations that do not normally lend themselves to red wine cultivation. The wines, which boast a deep red colour, are robust with an emphasis on tannins and their character is reminiscent of the wines produced in southern regions.
