Top marks for excellent wine
It would not be an exaggeration to say that, in the pretty town of Deidesheim, the tradition of growing wine goes back more than 2000 years. Due to the Riesling or ‘King of White Wines’, Deidesheim is enjoying an excellent reputation worldwide.
Its good climatic conditions are ideal for the production of top class wines. Unlike the rest of Germany, the Mittelhaardt region bordering the hills of the Haardtgebirge, not far from the river Rhine, boasts almost 2000 annual hours of sunshine. Large stretches of forest protect the vineyards around Deidesheim from chilly nights. The predominant soil consists of weathered new red sandstone which, depending on the location, may contain a certain amount of loam, shingle, lime or clay.
These types of soils are more free-draining with the effect that the roots of the vine tend to be enveloped by dry earth which in turn warms up the surrounding layers of soil to a greater and more permanent degree. In addition, vines growing in lighter soil need to grow deeper roots in order to get hold of moisture, which promotes the absorption of minerals. Altogether top conditions for excellent wines.
